Rivers on the Rise
Download Your Flood Checklist
The Mississippi and countless other Midwestern rivers are still significantly above flood stage, spurred by the heavy rain last week. Disasters have been declared in half a dozen states due to the deadly flooding that swept away vehicles, submerged homes and shut down bridges throughout the Midwest.
Click here to view a current flood map.
And while the Mississippi River topped out at some problematic spots on Monday, river towns aren’t in the clear yet. Forecasters are predicting another inch or more of rain this week in addition to heavy snow accumulations in the north.

East Coast Braces for Hurricane Sandy
Hurricane Sandy, already a cyclone of fearsome size and unusual intensity, underwent another alarming round of intensification early Monday morning as it began its dreaded left turn toward the East Coast of the U.S. The National Weather Service had posted hurricane and tropical storm warnings all the way from South Carolina to Maine.
Agility is currently responding to 16 disaster declarations and over 750 member locations are on Alert. For a first hand glimpse of the approaching storm watch these live webcams.

While the time to prepare for Hurricane Sandy is officially over, Agility has put together the following resources to help you gather last minute items and cope with impending power outages.

SnowFall & RainFall
This weekend marks the one year anniversary of “Snowtober”, the rare October snowstorm that hit the Northeast last year wiping out power for millions and reminding us all it is never too early to prepare.
This year, the East Coast is preparing for yet another Halloween storm as Hurricane Sandy makes its way up the Eastern Seaboard. The storm could potentially bring heavy rain, wet snow, high winds and possible storm-surge flooding to the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast this weekend and into early next week.
To help you prepare, Agility has put together the following checklists:
- Hurricane Preparedness Checklist – Hurricane Sandy will be a major threat to portions of the Atlantic Coast. Don’t wait, prepare today for the destructive winds, heavy rain and coastal flooding associate with hurricanes.
- Winter Weather Checklist – Hurricane Sandy could potentially produce wet and heavy snow in the mountains of West Virginia and Pennsylvania. As we learned last year, it’s never too early to prepare for severe winter weather.

Spring Flooding
Year after year, springtime flooding is linked to seasonal rain and rapid snowmelt, but this year may be a different story. Unseasonably warm temperatures and the noticeable lack of snow this winter may bring variable weather conditions in the coming months.
Areas that have received little precipitation this winter may later experience drought like conditions that, when the rain does come, can lead to flash flooding. Likewise, residents in western states may face an increased risk of flooding and mudslides due to the recent wildfires that left the ground charred and unable to absorb excess water.
The reality is, floods are the most common and costly natural disaster. Between 2006 and 2010, the average individual flood insurance claim was nearly $34,000. All it takes is a few inches of water to cause thousands of dollars of damage. Click here for helpful preparedness tips from Ready.gov and start preparing today.

Irene Threatens the Eastern Seaboard
Hurricane Irene's fury is growing and the National Hurricane Center warned today that the storm could be upgraded from its current level of Category 3 to a more ominous Category 4 by Thursday. It's been six years since the lower East Coast was last struck by a hurricane and much longer than that since a major storm hit New England. The first hurricane watches have been issued for the United States and emergency response officials are urging residents to take the necessary steps to prepare for Irene's impact.
Agility is already responding to over 350 member locations on alert status ranging from Florida to Maine. If you have any questions about preparing your business, please contact Agility’s Client Services Team at 866-364-9696.

Join Agility for a free Hurricane Irene webinar, tomorrow, Friday, August 26th at 10:30 am EDT. The brief webinar will provide you with an update on the threats Irene presents and the potential impact to your businesses.

Spring is in the air.
It may be hard to believe, but Spring is right around the corner. As temperatures slowly rise, flooding becomes a major issue in many parts of the country. In fact, the National Ocean and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is predicting another busy flood season in parts of the U.S.
The root cause of winter/spring flooding is fairly simple: frozen land prevents melting snow or rainfall from seeping into the ground. Each cubic foot of compacted snow contains gallons of water and once the snow melts, it can result in the overflow of streams, rivers, and lakes. Add spring storms to that and the result is often serious spring flooding.
- To help business owners prepare and spread the word about winter flooding, the team at FEMA has created a widget that can be added to your website. It’s pretty nifty:

- For tools to help assess your risk for flooding, view new flood maps, and to see flood videos
- Last but not least, Agility is hosting a webinar next week on “Business Survival: Disaster Recovery Basics.” Although this webinar is not specific to flooding, it’s packed with great information.
