Disaster Recovery Tip #28 Sizzling Summer

Dangerous heat grips more than half of the continental United States stretching from parts of Texas and Oklahoma to the plains, the Mississippi Valley and up the east coast.  The National Weather Service issued heat warnings or advisories for 24 states predicting blistering hot temperatures with heat indexes in the triple digits over the next couple days.

With heat being the number one weather-related killer, it is important to prepare. Below are a few tips to help you, your family and your employees stay cool and healthy in the midst of a scorcher.

  • Stay indoors in air conditioning. If your home or office is not air conditioned, spend at least two hours daily at an air-conditioned mall, library or other public place.
  • Wear sunscreen outside, along with loose fitting light colored clothes that cover as much skin as possible.
  • Avoid exertion during the hottest part of the day.
  • Drink water regularly even if you are not thirsty. Limit alcohol, and sugary drinks which speed up dehydration.
  • Never leave children or pets alone in the car.
  • Be a good neighbor; check on the elderly and people with disabilities in your community who may need assistance keeping cool.
