Disaster Recovery Tip #31 Storms on the Horizon

The fifth named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season is currently inundating Haiti with monsoon-like rains, slowly churning towards the Bahamas and Southern Florida. While forecasters do not expect Tropical Storm Emily to pose a significant threat to the US, that does not mean we are in the clear. Portions of the East Coast, particularly southern Florida, may experience rip currents and high surf through the weekend.

As a reminder, Hurricane season lasts from June to November with nearly 80 percent of all tropical cyclones — tropical storms and hurricanes — occurring in August, September and October.

Natural disasters have been particularly harsh throughout the country this year and hurricane season is predicted to be no different. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicts anywhere from 8 to 14 named storms still on the horizon. The best way to mitigate the damage of these storms is to prepare.
